Stepping out for Youth Mental Health
2 Oct 2022
Orygen, in collaboration with young people, created and piloted an art-based therapy program called ‘NinjaART’ at headspace Werribee which has been generously funded by the James Marcon Youth Health Foundation for a number of years.
NinjaART has worked as a 'soft entry' for teenagers to do some art work, have some food and have a chat about their mental health. It’s coordinated by a young clinician with an art background and has quickly become the a popular program with a constant waiting list.
All funds from Stepping out for Youth Mental Health will go towards art therapy at Orygen to support young people who are experiencing mental ill-health.

Without donations, we cannot continue our life-saving work. Fundraise for Orygen today and help support researchers like Associate Professor Jo Robinson, head of suicide prevention research.
Research into suicide prevention is crucial. Around one in four deaths of people aged 15 and 25 are due to suicide.
Although a lot is known about what’s behind suicide-related behaviours, less is known about what helps to lower suicide risk. To close this gap our suicide prevention team is developing new and better ways of preventing and treating suicide-related behaviours.
By donating to Orygen, you will be helping change the future for young people facing mental health challenges by supporting researchers like Professor Jo Robinson.
Mental illness is a young person’s disease.
Seventy-five per cent of mental health challenges occur before the age of 25.
That's why Orygen believes in creating new and improved treatments and providing care as early as possible. Adolescence should be a time of joy and growth for all young people, yet suicide is the leading cause of death for young people at this stage of life. Orygen believes that all young people deserve to grow into adulthood. With better treatments and support we know we can get there.
You can help us make a difference. Your fundraising can help us save lives.
Orygen's researchers are finding new and better ways to help people recover from all types of mental illness – from developing new approaches to suicide prevention, identifying alternatives to anti-depressants, finding better treatments for psychosis and schizophrenia, right through to creating digital platforms that help young people recover their mental health. With your help our researchers will be able to dedicate every single day to discovering new treatments and models of care that can directly improve outcomes for young people. This research integrates directly into clinical care, so that it can reach the young people we work with as quickly as possible. Without fundraisers like you, we cannot continue this critical, lifesaving research.
Orygen provides mental health services for young people aged 12 to 25 and helps mental health services around the country deliver the best possible care to young people too. By fundraising for Orygen, you are helping to improve these services - which range from the headspace centres we operate through to the specialist clinical care we provide to young people with severe and complex mental illness. Our early intervention approach to mental health care is considered best practice and has been used as a model for mental health services in Australia and around the world.
Policy and advocacy
When you fundraise for Orygen, you are supporting us in advocating nationally and globally for better outcomes for young people experiencing mental health challenges. Every dollar you raise helps us continue our work in policy development and advocacy to see better mental health care delivered everywhere. So, whether you're running a marathon or hosting a special event, it's all worth it!
